Houston Celebrates Mexico 2010 - Civic Ceremonies


 

September 1, 2009.- Mayor Bill White and Consul General of Mexico Carlos González- Magallón today announced a year-long series of events to be held here, beginning in September, marking the 200th Anniversary of Mexico’s Independence and the 100th Anniversary of its Revolution.


“The year 2010 will be the Bicentennial of Mexico’s Independence as well as the Centennial of the Mexican Revolution. The Mexico 2010 commemorations in Houston are expected to provide a fresh boost to the already close ties between Mexico and Houston in the cultural, social, economic and political spheres,” said Consul General Gonzalez.

 

“Mexico is our neighbor and our friend and Houston is proud to help boost that friendship, strengthen our ties, build understanding and work to help solve our mutual problems,” said Mayor White.


The program will include art exhibits, lectures, conferences, opera, concerts, dance and theatre performances, film screenings, book presentations, civic ceremonies, educational projects in the schools and libraries among others, to be held in many different venues around the city, from September 2009 thru November 2010.

The Steering Committee consists of representatives of the Mexican Consul General's office, the Mayor's Office of Cultural Affairs, the Houston Arts Alliance and other community members.
